=== PLANNED CS IT SERVICE OUTAGES ===

There will be a planned power outage for Malone Hall's G-29 Server Room, ''home to the CS central and CS faculty servers,'' on Friday, August 22, from 6am to 8am. (This is due to electrical work being done in that room.)
+
<!--:None at this time.-->

This power outage will affect all of our CS servers, and we will provide further information sometime next week as to what services will be unavailable during that two-hour timeframe.  Check back here before 8/22 for updates.
+
==== CS Labs/Systems Will Be Unavailable ====
 +
:'''WHAT:''' Malone Hall MH 122 '''and''' Malone Hall G61, both the Masters and Ugrad sides of the lab, and ''all'' the lab Linux computers, will be closed to CS students due to an ACM Programming Contest.

(Expect that we will be bringing down our CS servers ''at least one hour'' before the outage.)
+
:'''WHEN:'''  Starting Friday evening, November 7, 5pm '''through''' Saturday, November 8, 9pm.

'''''IMPORTANT:'''''  CS Faculty who host servers in G-29, ''your servers are affected too!''  So, please make sure you prepare for this outage and have someone (you or your students) take down your machines before the outage and reboot them after the outage, if need be.
+
:'''DETAILS:'''

'''''CS IT SERVICES AVAILABLE/NOT AVAILABLE DURING THE POWER OUTAGE:'''''
+
: Both the MH 122 '''and''' G61 Masters and Ugrad Labs will be used for an ACM Programming Contest and will therefore be '''''closed''''' to those not participating in the contest.

The power outage runs from 6am to 8am, however we have to shut down all of our CS servers before-hand.
+
: Additionally, all of the labs' Linux computers (masters1 through masters16 and ugrad1 through ugrad24) will be unavailable during the time period referenced above.

Therefore, starting at 4:30am, here is a list of the CS-specific services that will or will not be available between 4:30am and until sometime after 8am when the power is restored and we can begin powering up our servers:
+
* During the lab closure times, compute servers, gradx.cs.jhu.edu, gradz.cs.jhu.edu, ugradx.cs.jhu.ed, and ugradz.cs.jhu.edu  '''''will continue to be available remotely''''', via SSH.

'''DHCP:''' available
+
* We have to take down the lab systems late that Friday afternoon.  At the end of the ACM contest that Saturday night, the coordinators of that contest will be turning our lab computer systems back on.  Most should boot normally.  But, if some do not, just trying using an alternate one in the lab.  We'll be back in the Monday afterwards and can check on any systems that didn't boot normally.  (And don't forget, as mentioned above our compute servers -- gradx, gradz, ugradx, ugradz -- will continue to be remotely available, even if the lab systems are not.)

'''Email:''' unavailable (a secondary server will accept mail sent to us, but no one will be able to check mail or send it through our CS servers.)
+
* The printers in MH 122 and MH G61 will remain online, but, please pick up your printouts outside of the contest hours.

'''UGrad and Masters Lab machines:''' unavailable (you might seen them powered up, but lack of NFS and NIS servers mean they'll be effectively unusable during that time.)
+

==== Scheduled Networking Outage on the Malone Ground Floor ====

'''gradx, gradz, ugradx compute servers:''' unavailable
+
:'''WHAT:''' WiFi and Ethernet connections will not be available on the ground floor of Malone Hall during an upcoming JHU-planned networking outage.

'''resolving DNS:''' unavailable, but users should have 10.200.2.2 or 10.200.1.1 as a secondary, and those will continue to work, but you might notice a delay.
+
:'''WHEN:''' JHU's Planned Network Outage – Wednesday, August 27, 2025, from 8pm through midnight.

'''www.cs.jhu.edu website:''' partly available - the portions hosted by WSE (many of the main pages) will still be available but the locally-hosted portions (homepages, CS IT support pages, etc.) will not work

'''support.cs.jhu.edu wiki:''' unavailable
+
:'''DESCRIPTION:''' JHU is planning a network outage at Malone Hall to install new networking equipment. The outage will start at 8:00 pm and is expected to last between two and four hours. During the outage, the wireless access points on the ground floor will be offline, as will most of the Ethernet jacksPlease be prepared to not have any network connectivity on the Malone ground floor during this time.

'''home directories:''' unavailable

'''MySQL:''' unavailable

'''VMs that CS IT hosts:''' unavailable

=== gradx.cs.jhu.edu Outage Scheduled ===

'''WHEN: Monday, Feb 3, 9am to 5pm'''

gradx.cs.jhu.edu, our Grad Net compute server (available remotely by ssh only) will be '''unavailable all day on ''Monday, Feb 3, from 9am to 5pm''''' due to it being upgraded to Fedora 20During this time, please use one of our [https://support.cs.jhu.edu/wiki/Linux_Clients_on_the_CS_Grad/Research_Net Grad Net Linux clients] instead.

 +
:Ethernet connections in the Malone server room, G29, will not be affected by this outage.  Any servers in G29 should remain accessible.  The Linux clients and Ethernet jacks in room G61, which contains the ground floor masters and undergrad labs, will not be affected either.  (But any laptops brought into G61 during the outage probably won't be able to access the wireless network.)

* ''DNS will only be available if you've configured your computer with a secondary DNS server.''  If you don't have a secondary server in your computer's DNS defined, please add 128.220.2.7  You may notice a delay in DNS name resolution when falling back to the secondary server.

* ''Grad/Research Net user accounts/home directories will be inaccessible'' during the downtime.

* ''Access to any of our Grad/Research Net linux clients (including gradx and masters1 through masters16, as well as Dr. Smith's pllab machines that we maintain) will be unavailable''

* ''Your Grad/Research Net web pages will be unavailable.''  (The webserver is expected to be serving minimal pages, mostly notices, during that time.)
