The undergrad lab/collaboration room in Malone Hall room 122 has a projector in the main room which is available for use. It is connected to the ugrad1 lab machine and has video connectors on top of the ugrad1/ugrad2 table for use with laptops. There is also a projector in each of the small breakout rooms. The breakout room projectors have connectors to be used with laptops.

The main room projector may be controlled from either the Crestron panel in the wall to the right of the screen (and to the right of the printer) or from the small Crestron control panel on the ugrad1/ugrad2 collaboration table. These instructions will only cover the latter panel, as it's generally more convenient.

Using the Main Projector with the ugrad1 Lab Machine

There is a small Crestron control panel on the collaboration table next to ugrad1's monitor. If it's blank, touch the power icon in the upper righthand corner to turn it on. If it is displaying the message "Welcome to the Computer Science UG Lab" and has a button labeled "START", press the Start button. If it already has a bunch of control buttons visible, go the the next step.

Press the "PC" button in the "Input Select" group. The screen should lower (if it's not already down) and the projector will turn on (if it's not already on). It will take about 30 seconds before the projector starts displaying an image.

The lab machine defaults to a mirrored configuration for the monitor and projector. The projector will display an exact copy of whatever's on the monitor.

In some cases, it may be more convenient to have the projector function as a separate screen that can have its own windows. This also permits use of the entire width of the projector's screen. To activate this with the default login environment (Mate):

  • Go to the "System" menu at the top of the screen.
  • Open the "Preferences" submenu.
  • Open the "Hardware" submenu.
  • Click on the "Monitors" entry.
  • In the "Monitor Preferences" window that opens, uncheck the checkbox labeled "Same image in all monitors".
  • Click on the monitor named 'Crestron Electronics, Inc 36"'. It will probably be colored green. This is the projector.
  • Set the projector's resolution to 1920x1200.
  • Click the "Apply" button.
  • In the "Does the display look OK?" dialog box that comes up, click the "Keep This Configuration" button.

If you make changes to the monitor and projector layout, those changes will be remembered and reapplied every time you log into ugrad1.

When you're done with the projector, please press the "System Shutdown" button on the Crestron control panel, then press "Yes" when asked if you're sure. This will turn off the projector and raise the screen.

Using the Main Projector with a Laptop

Plug your laptop into the white box on top of the table closest to the printer. The box accepts either VGA or HDMI connections. If you only have DVI or DisplayPort on your laptop, you'll need an adapter. If you use the VGA connector and you want to use the room's speakers, you'll need to connect an audio cable from your laptop's speaker or line out jack to the audio jack on the box.

There is a small Crestron control panel on the collaboration table next to the video input box. If it's blank, touch the power icon in the upper righthand corner to turn it on. If it is displaying the message "Welcome to the Computer Science UG Lab" and has a button labeled "START", press the Start button. If it already has a bunch of control buttons visible, go the the next step.

Press the "Laptop" button in the "Input Select" group. The screen should lower (if it's not already down) and the projector will turn on (if it's not already on). It will take about 30 seconds before the projector starts displaying an image.

At this point you may configure the projector as a second monitor on your laptop. It will probably appear as a monitor named 'Crestron Electronics, Inc 36"'.

When you're done with the projector, please press the "System Shutdown" button on the Crestron control panel, then press "Yes" when asked if you're sure. This will turn off the projector and raise the screen.

Using the Breakout Room Projectors

Each breakout room has VGA and HDMI connectors on the wall. There are also audio jacks to be used in conjunction with the VGA connectors.

Connect your laptop to either the HDMI or VGA connector. Press the appropriate button on the input selection panel to the left of the connectors.

When you're done, please press the "PWR OFF" button on the input selection panel to turn off the projector.
