Obtaining a CS Computer Account

First, fill out an account form. You can pick one up from Debbie in Croft 224, or outside the Computing Services office (Croft B32 in the basement of Croft) or outside of Croft 226

Or, you can download and print a CS UNIX/Windows Account Request Form in pdf file or a .doc format.

Fill out the form completely (both sides), and get any appropriate signatures, and then, you sign both sides. You can hand in the form to Debbie in Croft 224.

A CS Unix account provides you with an @cs.jhu.edu e-mail address, home directory space, and space to host a webpage. See Creating a Webpage

Make sure you list your JHU-assigned JHEM/JHED e-mail address on the account form. Under “Local Address”, please list your local resident address while attending JHU, as well as your home address (when you’re not attending JHU.)

You will be contacted (probably via e-mail to one of the e-mail addresses you listed on the form) by Steve DeBlasio, after your account is created, with instructions for pick-up. Please allow at two business days for your account to be created. (GMail users, please check your spam/junk folder if you haven't heard from us in a reasonable amount of time. We might have mailed you, and it got filed as spam.)

Once you receive confirmation that your account has been created, you will meet with Steve DeBlasio in Croft 226 to pick up your account during his posted office hours.. Please bring your J-Card or other form of picture ID. If you plan to access the Ugrad Lab/CS Collaboration room, you will need to have your J-Card registered into our system.

CS Grad (or Research) Linux/Unix Accounts

These are for CS Graduate students (Masters, PhD), faculty, instructors, staff, researchers, postdocs, and visiting professors. You will have access to any of our CS Grad Net Linux/Unix computers.

Additionally, Grad Students students, Faculty, and Instructors can apply for both a Grad and Ugrad account on the same form.

CS Undergrad Linux/Unix Accounts

These are for CS Undergraduate Students and CS Minors, or non-CS students taking a CS class. (Grad Students, Faculty, and Instructors may also have an Undergrad account, especially if you are taking, teaching, or TA'ing Undergrad Courses.) Users with CS Undergrad accounts have access to the CS Dept. Linux/Unix computers.

Concurrent Students

Concurrent Students (in both the Undergrad and Grad programs at the same time) may apply for both a Grad and Ugrad account. If you're are or were an undergrad student and already have an CS Undergrad account, but have now become a grad student (or concurrent), please make a note on the top of your form and check off Graduate Account. That will provide you a CS Graduate account, but note that your @cs.jhu.edu e-mail will now be delivered to your CS Graduate account.

Windows Accounts

The CS Undergrad Lab (Croft 225/227) has several Windows machines available. If you need access to the Ugrad Lab’s Windows machines, check off that you want a Windows account.

You can apply for a Windows and Unix account at the same time on the same form.

(Note that CS Staff with Windows computers on their own desks will receive a Windows account when their machine is configured.)
