CS IT STAFF AVAILABILITY

  • The CS IT Support staff is back in Malone Hall. Our group is working a hybrid schedule with some of us working remotely on certain days, while others of our team are on campus.
  • We continue being available M-F, 8:30 to 5pm, but there may be certain times we might be online only.
  • Therefore, please remember to email support@cs.jhu.edu for assistance.
  • Also, please have Zoom available on your device(s), so that we can arrange to contact you using that method, as an alternative to in-person communication.
  • For the time being, Steve DeBlasio, our accounts liaison, is providing a virtual version of his daily office hours for accounts, etc. Email support@cs.jhu.edu for details.

PLANNED CS IT SERVICE OUTAGES

OS upgrades with the CS Linux clients

  • WHEN: Tuesday, August 22 through Friday, August 25
  • WHAT: Subsets of the CS Linux clients will be down for upgrades over the course of the week.
  • UPDATE: As of 12:30 pm on Friday, August 25, all of the Linux clients have been upgraded.

  • DETAILS: We will be upgrading our Linux clients from Fedora 36 to Fedora 38. This will require having the clients offline during the upgrades. We'll do this in stages, so there will always be some clients available at all times.

The lab machines whose numbers are integer multiples of five (ugrad5, ugrad10, ugrad15, ugrad20, masters5, masters10, and masters15) have already been upgraded, so those will remain available throughout the week. The upgrade schedule for the remainder of the systems will be as follows:

    • On Tuesday, August 22, ugrad1 through ugrad12 (in MH-122) will be upgraded. (Except for ugrad5 and ugrad10, which are already done.)
    • On Wednesday, August 23, ugrad13 through ugrad24 and masters1 through masters16 (in MH G-61) will be upgraded. (Except for ugrad15, ugrad20, masters5, masters10, and masters15, which are already done.)
    • On Thursday, August 24, ugradx and gradx (remotely-accessible only) will be upgraded.
    • On Friday, August 25, ugradz and gradz (remotely-accessible only) will be upgraded. See note below.

Expect each system being upgraded to be unavailable between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm on the days for which it's scheduled. If a system remains unavailable after 4:00 pm on its scheduled day, this page will be updated with the appropriate information.

NOTE a major change for the gradz and ugradz (remotely accessible only) systems: The upgrade process for gradz and ugradz will involve some changes to their networking. After the upgrade, those two systems will only be accessible from the Hopkins networks or via the JHU's VPN; not from the Internet at large. So... if you need to access these two specific Linux clients from outside the Hopkins networks, you will either need to use the VPN or you can connect to them from other client systems that are already on the JHU Network (e.g. our lab systems.)

CS COMPUTING LAB AVAILABILITY

MH-122 (CS Undergrad Lab/Collaboration room): Is available for in-person access.
  • All CS Linux systems from that room (ugrad1 through ugrad12) are available for use in-person or remotely, via ssh, except for the upgrade times mentioned above.

G-61 (CS Masters/Ugrad Labs): Is now available for in-person access.
  • All CS Linux systems in this lab area (masters1 through masters16 and ugrad13 through ugrad24) are available for use in-person or remotely, via ssh, except for the upgrade times mentioned above.
