Requesting a cs.jhu.edu Hostname in DNS

We can create cs.jhu.edu hostnames such as example.cs.jhu.edu, with approval from a faculty member.

This service is only intended to reference network systems that are hosted on non-CS networks. If you need an IP address on a CS subnet, see Requesting a Static IP Address on the CS Network. If you need a CS-hosted virtual machine, see Requesting A Virtual Machine.

This also only applies to hostnames that end in cs.jhu.edu. If you need a different domain (e.g. jhu.edu or jhmi.edu), you will need to contact Hopkins IT instead.

We can create three types of DNS records:

  • A records point to IP addresses; this would apply if you have a non-CS IP address that you need the hostname to point to
  • AAAA records are the same, but for IPv6 addresses
  • CNAME records point to other hostnames; these are often used for third-party website hosting, e.g. GitHub Pages

Process

  1. Fill out and submit a DNS record request
  2. If you are not a CS-affiliated faculty member, we will contact the faculty sponsor you listed to get their approval
  3. We will let you know when the DNS entry is set up (or, less commonly, if there's a problem with the faculty sponsor's approval)
