CS IT SERVICE OUTAGES

UNPLANNED CS IT SERVICE OUTAGES

Issue with Grad Net Self-Service File Recovery

  • WHEN: Started around October 30, 2020
  • WHAT: Intermittent errors while using self-service recovery
  • DETAILS: The /users/backup directory used for Self-Service File Recovery on the CS Grad Net Linux clients may be sporadically unavailable, due to a software bug. Although you may still attempt the self-service recovery, until further notice, if you need a file restored and are having issues accessing the /users/backups directory, please request restoration from our offline backups.

We are working on getting a fix for it, but it might be some time before that fix is available.

NOTE: Self-Service File Recovery continues to be available on the CS Ugrad Net.

PLANNED CS IT SERVICE OUTAGES

WHAT: Major CS Grad/Research Net IT services outage, as we update our mail server.

WHEN: Wednesday morning, Jul 21, 4:30 am to approx. 7:30 am.

DETAILS:

Our department mail server, blaze.cs.jhu.edu, will be taken offline in order to perform a system upgrade. We will begin work Wednesday, July 21 starting at 4:30 am. If there are no major issues during the upgrade, the service outage should last no longer than three hours (and might be completed before that time.)

For a short while at the beginning of the maintenance window, our DNS will be unavailable, and *all* department network resources, including the department website, will be unavailable. Other services, listed below, will be unavailable for the duration of the window.

If there are any unexpected complications during the update process that will delay the restoration of services, we will update our external status page:

https://csstatus.jhu.edu

(We will also update our support website's Notices page (this page) when we can, but this website will not be available during the DNS outage portion of the maintenance window.)

Suspended (unavailable) services expected to be down while blaze.cs.jhu.edu is being upgraded:

  • All CS systems, services, and websites will be unreachable while our DNS service is offline. This should be a short period of time (possibly as short as 10-15 minutes, but that will depend on various factors during the upgrade) near the beginning of the maintenance window.
After DNS is restored, the following services will continue to be unavailable during the remainder of the maintenance window:
  • CS Mail service, both incoming and outgoing, will be suspended for CS Grad/Research Net email accounts (those ending in @cs.jhu.edu). Incoming mail should be queued by the sender until our mail service is back up again.
  • IMAP, POP, and Webmail from our CS (Grad/Research Net) Mail server will be unavailable.
  • All CS-hosted mailing lists (including Mailman-based ones) will be unavailable.
  • SSH service to our CS Grad/Research Net Linux computers (masters1 through masters16, gradx, and gradz) may be unreliable. The systems might be accessible, but some actions might hang until the end of the maintenance window. We recommend not using these systems until after the maintenance is done.
  • Console (desktop) access to masters1 through masters16 will have the same potential complications as SSH access.

Note: CS Ugrad Net services should not be affected by this outage other than the initial DNS outage and incoming Ugrad Net email might be delayed.
