CS IT STAFF AVAILABILITY

  • The CS IT Support staff is back in Malone Hall. Our group is working a hybrid schedule with some of us working remotely on certain days, while others of our team are on campus.
  • We continue being available M-F, 8:30 to 5pm, but there may be certain times we might be online only.
  • Therefore, please remember to email support@cs.jhu.edu for assistance.
  • Also, please have Zoom available on your device(s), so that we can arrange to contact you using that method, as an alternative to in-person communication.
  • For the time being, Steve DeBlasio, our accounts liaison, is providing a virtual version of his daily office hours for accounts, etc. Email support@cs.jhu.edu for details.

PLANNED JHU SERVICE OUTAGES

JHU OUTAGE AFFECTING CS:

WHAT: Potentially multiple, less-than-10-second power outages in Malone Hall (& Hackerman)
WHEN: Thursday, July 25, from 3:30am through 6am.
DETAILS:
JHU Networking has indicated they are testing power transfer equipment in Mason Hall that will affect several buildings, including Malone and Hackerman. They will be cycling power to the buildings, perhaps several times. They expect their outages to be < 10 seconds each.
Our CS IT servers that provide you most of our IT services should remain up and running, since our servers have backup battery power. Unfortunately, the JHU network in the building does not. So, you will probably experience brief network interruptions when the power is cycled by Facilities.
Faculty who run their own servers in the CS Server Room (MH G-29), please note that if you do not have UPS units in your racks (and most of you do not), you can expect your systems will power cycle each time Facilities cycles power in Malone Hall. Please be aware. PhD students who maintain those systems (and perhaps other systems in the building), please keep that in mind as well.
The CS computing labs' systems (currently, for the summer, all located in G-61), those computers are not on UPS systems, so those computers will power cycle and should boot back up on their own.

UNPLANNED CS IT SERVICE OUTAGES

Issue with ugrad11

  • WHEN: Tuesday, June 7, 2022
  • WHAT: The ugrad11 Linux client has suffered a hardware failure and will be offline for an indefinite period of time. Please use one of the other Linux Clients on the CS Undergrad Net in the meantime.


PLANNED CS IT SERVICE OUTAGES

Upgrades with the CS Linux clients

  • WHEN: The week from Monday, July 18 through Friday, July 22
  • WHAT: Various of the Linux clients will be down as they are upgraded from Fedora 35 to Fedora 36.
  • UPDATE: Some of the upgrades have been completed:

    • As of 3:00 pm on Monday, July 18, all of the masters Linux clients have been upgraded to Fedora 36.
    • As of 4:30 pm on Tuesday, July 19, all of the numbered ugrad Linux clients have been upgraded to Fedora 36.

  • DETAILS: We plan to upgrade the systems on the following schedule:

    • On Monday, July 18 the masters systems (masters1 through masters16) will be upgraded, except for systems whose numbers are integer multiples of five (masters5, masters10, and masters15). The multiple-of-five systems have already been upgraded; please use them while the others are down.
    • On Tuesday, July 19, the numbered ugrad systems (ugrad1 through ugrad24) will be upgraded, except for systems whose numbers are integer multiple of five. The multiple-of-five systems have already been upgraded; please use those while the others are down.
    • On Wednesday, July 20, the compute systems ugradx and gradx will be upgraded. Please use one of the numbered Linux clients while those are down. (Use one of ugrad1 through ugrad24 instead of ugradx and masters1 through masters16 instead of gradx.)
    • On Thursday, July 21, the compute systems ugradz and gradz will be upgraded. Please use use ugradx or gradx while those are down.
    • On Friday, July 22, any remaining systems will be upgraded if we were not able to take care of them on the preceding days.
    NOTE: On each day, the upgrades will start at roughly 9:00 am and are expected to be complete by 5:00 pm.

Limited availability with ugrad1 through ugrad12

  • WHEN: June 10 through August 10, 2022
  • WHAT: ugrad1 through ugrad12 will only be available remotely through SSH. Please see the CS Computing Lab Availability section below for details.


CS COMPUTING LAB AVAILABILITY

MH-122 UNAVAILABILITY
WHAT: MH-122 (and its breakout rooms) will be closed for the summer due to a CLSP workshop being held there.
WHEN: Tuesday, June 7 through Wednesday, August 10.
NOTES:
  • The MH-122 Linux systems, ugrad1 through ugrad12, will continue to be available, but only remotely via ssh. There will be some downtime for those systems on 6/7 and on 8/9 (and possibly 8/10) as the systems are transferred from, and then, back to MH-122. Please see our page on: Linux_Clients_on_the_CS_Undergrad_Net for a list of our remotely-available Ugrad Linux systems.
  • The printer in MH-122 will be unavailable during this time.
  • The G-61 Masters/Ugrad Lab will remain open and available during the summer, and its Linux systems will be available for in-person and remote work, as usual. The G-61 printer will remain available as well.


G-61 (CS Masters/Ugrad Labs): Is now available for in-person access.
The Linux systems in this lab area (masters1 through masters16 and ugrad13 through ugrad24) are available for use in-person or remotely, via ssh. Masks are once again required in the lab

AUDIO/VISUAL (A/V) OUTAGES

None at this time. But, note that the A/V equipment in MH-122 is unavailable since the room is unavailable for Summer, 2022. See above for details.
