INTRO

The Computer Science Dept at JHU hosts its own CS email service (addresses of the form @cs.jhu.edu). This category provides documentation on various aspects of our CS email service.

But Doesn't JHU have their own email system?

That's right... JHU itself offers various types of its own email services as well, depending upon whether you're faculty, staff, students, etc. Your department administrator can make sure a JHU email address has been created for you. Your JHU email address is essential to have, as many JHU administrative emails are typically sent to your @jhu.edu address by default (although, you can forward those messages to an alternative address, e.g. a CS email address.)

Please see our page on JHU's Exchange-based Email Service for more information about their service, how to configure it, and who to contact if you're having issues with setup or access to it.

So, why a CS email address?

  • You might choose to utilize the @cs.jhu.edu address as an identity, specifically associated with the CS department, as many other universities' Computer Science departments have.
  • CS email also offers custom automatic mail-folder filing for incoming mail (for example, procmail.)
  • CS email provides configurable spam-prevention/management capabilities.
  • CS email provides compatibility with any IMAP/POP-supporting mail client, not just ones with OAUTH2 capabilities.

Having both a CS and JHU Email Address

You can have both a CS email address and a JHU email address at the same time. But, we recommend you forward whichever address you consider your secondary address to your primary address. (If your preferred email address is your own personal email address, you might want to forward your CS and/or JHU email addresses to that address instead. However, as you'll see in the mail forwarding section, forwarding your JHU or CS email to an outside address might not be advised.)

NOTES:

  • For users CS's email service who have both a CS Grad Linux account and a CS Ugrad Linux account, your CS email will default to your CS Grad account.
  • Official CS or JHU-related email is sent to your JHU @jhu.edu email address by default. So, if you have both CS and JHU email addresses, make sure you monitor both addresses (or forward one to the other.)

Problems with your JHU or CS email service?

If you have issues with JHU's own email services, please contact the JHU Help Desk.
If you have questions/problems regarding CS's own email service, and you've already looked through the Mail category of this website, please email support@cs.jhu.edu with as much info as you can to help us answer your question or troubleshoot your email problem.
