The CS Department is split between two networks.

• The Grad/Research Net (sometimes, simply referred to as The Grad Net or The Research Net)
• The Undergrad (or Ugrad) Net

You will usually hear us refer to these nets by those names, and we're usually referring to our Linux Clients on those nets.

IMPORTANT!

Although, the software applications and operating systems are generally the same between the two Net systems, the account, mail, and web systems on the Grad/Research and Ugrad nets are both completely different from each other... different e-mail addresses/email systems, different accounts, different webpages, different locations, different home directories. The Ugrad network machines have disk quotas as well.

All CS machine names end in .cs.jhu.edu

Many of the Dept's Linux clients are available in labs/offices, where you can sit and work directly on them. Some are compute servers, only available remotely, via ssh. But, note, too, that all of our Linux clients are available remotely, via ssh.

NOTE: You will need an appropriate CS Account for access to the various CS computer systems.

Grad/Research Net

The Grad/Research Network is made up of Grad/Research Net-configured Linux (Fedora) clients, including compute servers . These computers are available to Masters and PhD students, Faculty, Researchers, Postdocs, Instructors, and CS staff. These systems are used primarily for education (coursework) purposes and for light research that does not impair others' access to cpu/memory resources. Please see additional notes below.

Masters students

You'll want to work in the Masters' Lab located in the first room within Malone Hall G-61. Please see Debbie in Malone 160 (the main CS office) or Steve DeBlasio (during his posted office hours in Malone G-61A) to get your J-Card swipe-registered for that room. The G61 Masters Office/Lab has several Linux machines available for general use. A printer is located there as well. Please make sure you lock your computer screen anytime you leave the room. If you will be gone for a long period of time, please log out, so that others may use the machine.

PhD students

Please check with your faculty advisor for your room assignment and computer assignment. You might be assigned a computer that the CS Dept. Computer Staff supports, or you might be assigned a computer supported by your own lab's admin.

New Faculty, Researchers, Postdocs, Instructors, and CS Staff

Please review the document on services provided by CS IT Support, and then discuss your computing needs with CS IT Support, although any of the Grad/Research Net Linux boxes are available remotely via ssh. If you're teaching a class, you might need to use one of the Ugrad Net (see below) machines as well.

All of our Grad/Research Linux clients are available remotely via ssh.

Undergrad Net

The Undergrad network includes systems such as Ugrad Net-configured Linux (Fedora) machines, Windows machines, and a printer. Many of these systems are located in one or both of the CS Undergrad Labs (MH 122 and MH G-61). These systems are primarily used for education (coursework) purposes.

The larger Ugrad Lab Collaboration Room is the CS Ugrad Lab located in Malone Hall 122. It's a great spot for working on group projects. (It itself has three smaller break-out rooms.) There are only Linux systems in the Collaboration Room. A printer is located in MH 122.

The second main Undergrad Lab room is located in an inner room within Malone Hall G-61. It is more conducive to a quiet working area. There are mostly Linux systems and a couple of Windows systems in this room. There is a printer in MH G61 as well.

Windows Systems

CS, in terms of centrally manages systems, is primarily Linux-based. Besides supporting the CS Department's Windows-based office computers, we also support two additional Windows systems located in the Ugrad Lab portion of G61. You'll need to fill out an account form for access.
