The CS Department is split between two networks.

  • The Grad/Research Net (sometimes, simply referred to as The Grad Net or The Research Net)
  • The Undergrad (or Ugrad) Net

You will usually hear us refer to these nets by those names.

The Grad/Research and Ugrad nets are both completely different... different e-mail addresses/email systems, different accounts, different webpages, different locations, different home directories. The Ugrad network machines have disk quotas as well.

All CS machine names end in .cs.jhu.edu

Many of the Dept's Linux clients are available in labs/offices, where you can sit and work directly on them. Some are compute servers, only available remotely, via ssh. But, note, too, that all of our Linux clients are available remotely, via ssh. As you'll see below, we also currently have one Solaris machine (available remotely), on the grad network, but, we might be phasing that out over time.

NOTE: You will need an appropriate CS Account for access to the various CS computer systems.

Grad/Research Net

The Grad/Research Network is made up mostly Linux (Fedora) clients and one Solaris client. These computers are available to Masters and PhD students, Faculty, Researchers, Postdocs, Instructors, and CS staff. Please see the notes below.

Masters students

You'll want to work in the Masters' Office located in Shaffer 4. Please see Debbie in Croft 224 (the main CS office) or Steve DeBlasio (during his posted office hours in Croft 226) to get your J-Card swipe-registered for that room. The Shaffer 4 computing area is split up into two sides. One side is the Collaboration Area, and the other side is the Lab Area. There are several Linux machines available in those areas for general use. A printer is located there as well. Please make sure you lock your computer screen anytime you leave the room. If you will be gone for a long period of time, please log out, so that others may use the machine.

PhD students

Please check with your faculty advisor for your room assignment and computer assignment. You might be assigned a computer that the CS Dept. Computer Staff supports, or you might be assigned a computer supported by your own lab's admin.

New Faculty, Researchers,Postdocs, Instructors, and CS Staff

Please discuss your computing needs with CS IT Support, although any of the Grad/Research Net Linux boxes are available remotely via ssh. If you're teaching a class, you might need to use one of the Ugrad Net (see below) machines as well.

All of our Grad/Research Linux clients, including a compute server, are available remotely via ssh.

The only Solaris box available on the grad net is called peregrine.cs.jhu.edu It is a compute server, and is only available remotely via ssh. However, this machine is considered as-is, as we are currently not installing new software on it. We only suggest using peregrine if our Linux boxes, including the Linux compute server, will not suffice. You should also use it if you have to run/compile Solaris-only applications. Additionally, you may use it for running CDE/Openwin-based applications.

Undergrad Net

The Undergrad network is made up of Linux machines, Windows machines, and a printer. The Undergrad Lab, located in Croft 225/227, is split into two sections. The smaller of the two sections is the Ugrad Lab Area, consisting of both Linux and Windows machines, as well as the Ugrad printer. The larger of the two rooms is the CS Collaboration Room, a great spot for working on group projects. That room consists of Linux machines. Please see Debbie in Croft 224 (the main CS office) or Steve DeBlasio (during his posted office hours in Croft 226) to get your J-Card swipe-registered for Croft 225/227.
